Events, workshops and Lanyrd – Sept-Oct 2010

Freelancers or LSPs alike know how crucial it is for their business to be constantly aware of what happens in the industry. A good way to stay abreast of what’s going on is taking part in CPD activities.

It’s not easy, don’t get me wrong! Many event-related websites lure you into thinking is all ‘crucial’ and ‘unmissable’ but it is also true that ‘il mondo è bello perché è vario’ [Italian for it takes all sorts (to make a world)] and what’s SO relevant for me may be not all relevant for others.

In any case, I have just registered Rainy London for this online, free event for freelancers on 24-25 Sept:

It seems to be well organised and the website explains the main points of the online event, including a showcase of the main speakers. Although it is NOT translation-focused, it sounds like an interesting think tank place to check out. And free, blimey!

On a more Trans/Interp point of view, Bath will be hosting another event this October, 16, organised by the ITI WRG. There is no online page for the event but this is a summary:

2. Work/Life Balance and Pensions for Freelancers

Sat 16th October from 11.00 am until around 4.00 pm at the Esther Parkin Residences at the University of Bath.
There will be a small charge of 5.00 for non-ITI WRG members – please send a cheque which will serve as confirmation of your place at the event, made payable to ITI Western Regional Group, to:
Mihailo Rnic, 10 Rectory Close, Wraxall, Bristol, BS48 1LT
Places are limited so please book as soon as you can to ensure a space.

When you post your cheque please e-mail Anna on for the booking.
Please could bookings be made by around Monday 4th October to allow for coordination of lunch

Finally, a classic:

3. the Language Show will be in London’s Earls Court again this year, from 15 to 17 October.

I have not been there personally, but it is a good starting point for translators- and linguists-to-be as many agencies will be there, along with a stand of the IoL, who is a partner in the organisation.

Another good source of events and conferences is a new tool called Lanyrd, that allows users to find interesting events via your Twitter account. And if no industry-related gatherings are available in your area or country, you can always add one you know of. Nice! You can also follow them at @lanyrd.

Where will you go?

Till next time,
