The 6th edition of the social interpreting conference The Critical Link will take place in Birmingham, from the 26th to 30th July, 2010. The location this year will be Aston University, Birmingham. The 6th International Critical Link Conference, which will bring together representatives from every sphere of the public service interpreting community. Academics, interpreting practitioners, employers, trainers, policy makers, service providers and service recipients will have the opportunity to participate in a lively and stimulating international exchange of information, knowledge and skills.

Rainy London‘s Val will be there too! And will try to report live interesting sessions (here, Facebook or Twitter) so stay tuned!

Worried about translation quality? Free QA tool ApSIC XBench might help you

I came across ApSIC Bench via a colleague and I have to say, it is quite a simple one but it does help for the basics needs of QA procedures.

First of all, the download is free (defo a plus), second it offers features like consistency checks, numeric values checks and much more. It also helps detecting if any segment has been left blank, or if the source is the same as the target, avoiding unpleasant mismatches and tiny mistakes.

It supports Trados files (both Workbench and TagEditor‘s) and by simply ticking a few options in the main mask, users can obtain a report for the file they have been working on and then edit directly onscreen for changes to be applied in the relevant .ttx or word file. Once the changes have been made and you’re happy with the final result, an html or txt format file can be exported or sent.

Of course, this is not the solution to all problems (machines are still machines, after all, right?) but it does helps a tad here and there.

Unfortunately, the only available version is currently just for Windows platforms, but it runs smoothly on Parallels Desktop, in case you a (savvy) Mac user :p

ApSIC Xbench 2.8 is

currently under beta test and you can download it here oducts_xbench.html

Random cute fact: the icon on your desktop will look like a pink diamond 🙂

Till next time,

Buon compleanno, fabulous Fab!

Today is Independence Day in the US but on a much more personal level, it’s our favourite web designer‘s b-day, Fabio, today 29!

Growing up is always a challenge but some people is good at everything… and much stronger than life itself.

Thanks for always being there for Rainy London and of course…for Val 😛

Auguri amore.
